    Story of an Hour

I absolutly love the story. It had figurtative languague, and it gave hints of what would happen at the end of the story which was cool ’cause i guessed what happens at the end.

I could suggest to add more details to the story becaus at the end you don’t know at the end if she is physically and mentally dead or if she is figurativly dead.

When Ms Fielder fist told us that we were going to read a story called Story of An Hour, I thought it was going to be a story about something to do with an hour(time wise). But when we read it I had a totally different oppinion. I think the short story was good though. After I read this short story I had many questions like, Why did this happen and why did that happen, but after I read it again I understood it. As was stated in the 1st example of a critique, I thought Ms. Mallards was a old. But at the end I understood and thought it was a very good story.

When I read Story of an Hour I did not get it at first. The auther did a really good job of confusing us. At first I did not understand what the auther was trying to say. I thought it was about a lady who’s husband died and then after there at got lost. I had to keep reading it over and over again to finally understand what it was about. I think that if I had to give it a rating I would give it to stars because it did not have a good ending and I’m am pretty sure it is not going to have a sequl. So if he had made it a little clearer I think I may have enjoyed it a lot more then what I did so it was just okay. Taylor Samples

“The Lottery” is a story that twists and turns. At first, you think that people will win something good from winning the lottery ,but Mrs. Hutchinson gets killed. You would of thought that she would win money, land, livestock, or food. The story foreshadows slightly, but it is hard to guess, from the begining, what will happen at the end. I think that the author did a wonderful job of making an entertaining, and suspenseful story

The Story of an Hour. I thought this story was good, but sad. It was sad that the lady died because she wasz so depressed about her husband at the beginning and then she died because then she noticed he wasn’t dead. This story was confusing, but once you read it again you understand it better. I don’t think that a kid would understand this story it has an oddness to it. I liked this story and it was definatly good and I hope people read it.

In the beginning of Story of an hour it is pretty confusing, because they leave out important details. Then you get the news that her husban has died in a train crash and the woman going up th her bedroom drinking medicine and and saying tyhat she is free, free, free. Then she finally came down stairs and her husband came through the door. Then she died. the auther left spaces in between so you get kingof confused but it was a pretty good story.

In The Story of an hour, Ms. Mallard is overcome with emotion when the news of her husband’s death reach her. It is interesting because the story first says she cries in her room, but then she is happy because she can do whatever she wants to do for the rest of her life. But in the late 1800s, a woman’s status depended on who her husband was. So it forces the reader to figure out what Ms. Mallard’s emotions were.

    The Lottery

The lottery was trying to say that we as human beings are too selfish and would be fine with doing something wrong to someone else to benifit ourselfs. The author is also trying to say, kind of in a hidden way, that we humans are also stubborn and not open minded most of the time, because in the story, the people don’t want to change the tradition of “The Lottery”. It is harder for them to really think about whether or not “The Lottery” is good or bad, because they grew up being taught that it is just something they do, they learned that at a very young age, so to them, it is normal behavior. That way, they wouldn’t really be open to changing it because they would have no idea that it is wrong, but if someone from a village that had stopped “The Lottery” came to visit them during that time of the year, they would be horrified at the tradition because they aren’t used to it and no that it is wrong.

My opion on the short story “Story of the Hour”, is a dark sorta short story, but still kind of good. When I was started to read the story, I kind of felt bad for the lady. I mean her husband died,so that is just instict to feel bad for her. But then, she stsrted to say she is free, and she is happy that her husband is dead. I sorta got confused about it. So then I was kind of happy for her. I guess since she was free, that maybe her husband was cruel to her. When her husband walked in and it killed her,I was sad that she died, but happy that her pain was over.

The story of a hour is a very intesting story because of all the emotions how Lousie reacts to the stiuation and how she changes her reation. In the beginng you really dont see the death of the husband coming or what see says how she acts to it. What i am trying to say is that i was surpirsed when she got all happy that she was free of her husband. In our own century women who have thier husband die cry about it very much. Although the twist of the story con fused me i thought it was an okay story

    story of an hour

in my opinion this story was about how a woman had 0 rights during that time. its pretty hard to read one time and absolutly understand the plot and theme. i thyought it was an emotional story about a woman who thought her husband was dead. she found out heas alive and died afterword. she was sad at first then she found she was free. no more husband to take care of. at the last second she figures out hes alive. she dies because she reather be dead than live with him.

This story was extremely interesting. In the begining the author does an excellent job of making the town seem innocent and not like a murderous litlle village. I think the author should’ve put a little more explanation of what happened in the end, because I had to reread the ending numerous times before i understood it. This story was a great example of a situation that proves how selfish and greedy people ate. I was amazed by how the characters in the story had no apathy when they were killing Ms Tessie. Over all I enjoyed reading this story, but maybe next time we should read a happier story.

  14.   Sam Schmal on August 29th, 2008

this story was a very intruiguin and suspensful. At the beggingin i was was very confused and bored but as the story progressed it became very interesting. at the beginnging i thought mrs mallard was an old lady because of the authors description of her heart diesease. but thenthe author described her as a young woman. at the beggingfin her freinds told her of how her husband had died and she was grieving his passing.then she started to consider what had happened. she realzed that she was a free woman and was happy about her new found freedom. so she was bouncing down the staris and to her horror he husband walks through the door and her heart gives out and she falls over dead

  15.   Alison Hopkins on August 29th, 2008

    THE LOTTERY
The short story “The Lottery” was intense, and slightly overwhelming in the sense of human cruelty. It was completely out of the blue when Tessie was killed. I then discovered the year it was written. It was 1948, and the bloodiest war in human history had just ended, with the holocaust unveiled. It now makes perfect sense that Tessie was randomly chosen and murdered- just like Germany’s Jews. This is the message the author was trying to convey. Even with that said the Lottery was rather chilling.
It begins happily a sunny day children playing on the green. E#very one assembles and everything begins to turn. Adult faces are grim, women breathes sighs of relief when their husbands paper is clear, and Bill Hutchinson freezes in fear. And Finally, Tessie is stoned to death. Don’t tell me that that isn’t just a dramatic change in plot!

The story ”The Lottery” was a very suspencful and intreging story. When I started reading this story I thought it was just a tipical lottery where someone wins money or prize. It started out talking about this black box that the people draw out of, thin the story takes a turn and the person who gets picked actually gets picked to die. I think that was sad how no one really showed any emotions when she was stoned to death, but i think he did a very good job of creating suspence and not giving the ending away. I personally liked the story and I think its a really good exciting story

    “The Lottery”
I think that “The Lottery” was a very well written story. I think that the author did a very good job of letting you see how the characters feel without giving away too much information, so that the end was still a surprise. I feel like there should have been more foreshadowing at the end. Maybe the author could have given us the insight into a townspersons mind. That way we could have a better idea of what was going to happen. I felt that at some points what was happening was a little hard to follow, but all in all, I thought it was a great story.

  18.   Hugh FitzGibbons on August 29th, 2008

My opinion of the “Story of an hour” is a women who thinks that is so bad that her husband is dead, but she thinks it over and she realizes that she does not have to take care of him all of the time. I can relate to that because for about three months my dog went to a dog tranning place. i thought it would be bad but the house was much more quiet and peacefull. At the end her husband really suprised her and it killed her. That ending kind of suprised me.

This story is kind of weird. I didn’t understand it very well the first time i9nread it. I thought Loise was going crazy when she started yakking on about being free. Free from what? Being married? If she hated it so much, why did she let it happen? I mean , even if her husband didn’t personally imprison her, why didn’t she talk to him and explain that she wanted to do things for herself? I guess it was all about image & reputation. Blech…

    The Story of An Hour

I thought this story was very stupid. The wife died because her husband was alive. that makes no since at all. Anyways, i thought this was like the lottery because some one dies in both of them.

    “Story of an Hour”

“Story Of A Hour” is a story about a women with heart disease who learns that her husband has died in a train wreck. At first, she is devastated, but then, she realizes that she is free. She doesn’t have to stay home cooking and cleanign all day. She can worry about herself and no one else. She can go and do whatever she wants. When she walks downstairs, she sees her husband stading in the doorway

    The Story Of An Hour
The feelings in this story are very unexpected. The family and friends spent a lot of time trying to cushion the heart breaking news of her husbands death. At first she is devestated, then her feelings altar drastically. She is overjoyed and has a sense of freedom. Then when she found out that her husband was alive, I think she had very mixed feelings. She felt happy, sad, and guilty for being overjoyed in the death of another. I think she dies from all of the differnt feelings going on in her head and then her heart cannot take it. The story was very strange, touching and gives us an insite into the feelings of wives in the 1880’s.

    The Lottery

I thought this story was well written. I like it because the title is, “The Lottery” so you think it would be about winning money. Then Shirley Jackson give you some clues that it might be something bad when, so you don’t really know what will happen in the end. The end ends up with a mom getting stoned, and her two year old helps.

In the short story, “Story of an Hour” an ill woman is told by her own sister that her husband is dead. She instantly goes into a peril of sadness untill she clearly evaluates the situation and realizes the goodness of the siuation; she had no one but herself to wait on. She was free! She ran down the stairs in joy, only to find her husband, not dead! What killed her was her heart disease and guilt for her happiness at her husband’s ‘death’.

    The Lottery Review:

When I first started reading ‘The lottery’ I thought the story would be about winning a prize. When I got to the end I was very shocked and horrified because of the sacrifice. After reading the story a second time through I realized there were many clues in the story about the ending, but I thought it was very interesting how the author made a surprised effect at the end. I did not enjoy the story because of the ending, but I thought the author did a good job with getting her point accross about sacrifice.

“The Story of an Hour” was a very interesting story . Both stories, “The Lottery” and “The Story of an Hour” both have tragic endings. However, they both had a reason for it.
“The Story of an Hour’s” ending is filled with shock from the reader. The reader thinks that the wife is so sad of her hsuband’s death, that you think it would end in that kind of way. But that’s what the author wants you to think. After she keeps saying, “Free, free, free,” the reader now knows that she is also happy about her husband’s death since she now has no boundreys.
But the ending has a twist. Her husband comes in looking fine and un-harmed.. The wife is shocked by this so she dies of happiness and sadness at the same time.
This story was very well done for me and i wish a lot more short stories were like this.

    “Stroy of an Hour” CONTINUED

and then, she dies of heart failure. I thought the author wrote this very well. She took on a new point of view I would never expect to see. The emoitions of this women were amazing. Though the ending suprised me, I thought it was a great story.

    The Lottery
The Lottery is a misleading story. At first you think something good is happening and you make up your own details. Then you start getting clues on how it is not going to be good. All of a sudden you start realizing that this is not a good lottery. The lottery is really a way of finding a person to sacrifice. The author makes a good point on how human nature is horrible and relecting on the Hollocaust, but in a very harsh way. It gets a point across, but if I had written it I would have done it in a gentler way. The story is well written and very interesting, but I would not read it to young children or if you get nightmares easily. This story really makes you think. I did not enjoy it, but I was very interested in it.

  32.   Shelise duCille on August 29th, 2008

The Lottery is a very interesting story. When I first started reading it I thought it was about a town that had a lottery every year and whoever won got some sort of reward. But after a while I realized that some people were nervous, upset, and scared. That’s when I started figuring out that it probably wasn’t a good thing. The suspense was amazing and I couldn’t wait to find out what was supposed to happen. The ending was a big surprise because I thought that it was just going to be losing a house or going to jail or something, but I was never expecting that. This story was great!

  33.   Zack Alexander on August 29th, 2008

I think Story of an Hour is a very complex story. The first you read it, you don’t know why Louise drops dead at the sight of her husband. She actually dies from surprise and dread, I think. I don’t think there was much joy invovled; I bluntly think that she thought she was free, but her husband came back to ruin her day (life). The best part is that the story was written in 1894. This helps you better understand that women didn’t have any freedoms in the era of this story, so the majority of Louise’s “surprise” was dread. She probably gets a loaf of moldy bread each day, and if Brently (the husband) is nice, maybe a glass of river water.

  34.   Andrew D. on August 29th, 2008

    “The Lottery”
My opinion of this story was that I liked it, but it was weird at the same time. In the begining of the story you think that the lottery might be a good thing, bbut as the story progresses you begin to realize that to win might be a bad thing. The second time you you read the story you notice that the author has been giving you clues about what is abaut to happen. When I got to the end of the story I was supprised, I had realized that it would be bad to win but I didn’t realize that the punish ment would be death.

  35.   Jordan George on August 29th, 2008

I think that that The Story of an Hour was an interesting story about a woman trapped in marraige.
She had a weak heart and was really hurt when she found out that her husband was dead. She at first thought that life wouldn’t be worth living. Then she realized that she would be able to only care for herself and not her husband. When she saw that her husband was alive she died from mixed feelings. Sad that she would have to care for him again. Happy that he was alive. And guilty that she had been happy about his death.

  36.   Palmer Brown on August 29th, 2008

I think this book is a waste of peoples time. I don’t say that unless it was really bad. I did not get the point of that “short story”. =(

The Story of an Hour critique
I think the Story of an Hour was very well written, but is very strange! It has many twists for such a short story. At first, I thought by the way the family friends were telling Mrs. Mallard about Mr. Mallard’s death that Mrs. Mallard was deeply devoted to Mr. Mallard, but it turned out the opposite! It actually took me awhile to figure it out, and when I did, I wasn’t that surprised. Most marriages back then were arranged, without love. It was still surprising that she was soooo happy about his death! When Mr. Mallard came in the door, I felt so bad for Mrs. Mallard! I couldn’t believe it! I think Chopin did a good job putting the story together.

  38.   Aaron W. on August 29th, 2008

“Lottery” was a very interesting story. It’s one of those stories where you know what is going to happen, but you try and reasure yourself with nice and peaceful thoughts. So,when someone was stoned, I could say i was suprised but I would be lieing.

  39.   Perry Heilbron on August 29th, 2008

    The Lottery
This was a very cool and weird story. It was a story which you could predicted the ending, but I didn’t. It had a lot of history as well, but I think that it was to boring in the beganing. I think that it should of had more excitment like in the end of the story. Other waise it was a good short story, and the stoning part was cool too.

  40.   Anna Ellis on August 29th, 2008

I did not like this story. It is about a old lady who has a heart ailment. She is told that her husband is dead, and is very sad at first. Then, she realizes that she is free, and becomes happy. Her husband’s death was all just a mistake, and he comes home. When she comes down from her room, her husband is standing in the doorway. She is happy and sad all at the same time. The drama was too much for her heart, and it gave out.
